Woodbury Dance Company Presents
Belle Reve, Petrushka & The Showcase
La Belle Reve
A young girl sits reading her book. Her friends come and try to play with her, but she refuses and continues to read. They steal her book and tease her until they get fed up and leave. The book begins to come to life and the fairy spirits start to dance around her, she is unaware. The wicked sprites from the story come to taunt the young girl. The queen of the sprites enters and puts a spell on her, leaving her unconscious.
The fairy spirits return and dance around the young girl to lift the spell, then disappear. She awakes, thinking it was all a dream. Her friends return and the girl tells them about her dream.
Was it a dream?
Petrushka
The Shrovetide fair comes to a Russian village. A puppet show is one of the main attractions. There are three puppets: a rag doll called Petrushka, a ballerina doll and a soldier doll. Petrushka is infatuated by the ballerina. However, the soldier sets his sights on the ballerina too. The ballerina returns the affections of her dashing admirer, much to the disappointment of Petrushka. After much flirtation and dancing, the love triangle reaches a climax when Petrushka challenges the soldier for the love of the ballerina. The confrontation results in the soldier stabbing Petrushka and winning the heart of the ballerina.
